A coupler insert (also called a “plug” or “nipple” in quick‑connect systems) is the male half of a quick-disconnect coupling.
1/2 Male usually means the threaded connection on that insert is 1/2″ (inch) male thread.
Often, this is a BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread in many pneumatic couplings, but it could also be another standard depending on the manufacturer
For example, GAV’s 1/2″ male insert is described as having 1/2″ BSP male thread.

The insert has a valve inside: when you push it into the matching female coupler, the female’s valve opens and allows flow; when disconnected, the valve closes to stop the flow.
